A place. Not a group.

Somewhere Else.

Not a channel. Not a group. A place โ€” the kind that doesn’t have an address, just a quiet few who know where it is.

๐ŸŒ€

A place isn't a location

It’s a concept. A shared idea that a handful of people orbit around. It doesn’t have an address โ€” it has a feeling, and the people who recognize it.

What makes a place โ†’
๐Ÿ—๏ธ

You get in because you know

Every place has an entry object โ€” a shared symbol chosen by whoever created it. There’s no password reset, no invite code. You either know it or you don’t. That’s the point.

๐ŸŒŠ

Conversations that don't accumulate

Messages roll. New ones arrive, old ones go. There’s no backlog to catch up on, no history to audit. The thread is always now โ€” and then it’s gone.

About rolling windows โ†’
Built differently

Quiet by design

Every decision in Somewhere Else is made against the attention economy. No feeds. No notifications. No read receipts.

๐ŸŒ€

Places, not groups

A place is a concept. It doesn't have a name โ€” it has people who recognize it.

๐ŸŒซ๏ธ

Messages fade naturally

The thread rolls. Nothing accumulates. No history, no receipts, no catching up.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Entry by shared object

A symbol, not a password. You know it because someone showed you. That's the whole thing.

๐Ÿ“ก

No notifications

Nothing pings you. You show up when you want to. The place waits.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ

Quiet by design

A small collection of people, not an audience. Size is a feature, not a limitation.

๐Ÿคซ

Yours until they're gone

Your words. Seen by the people in your place, cleared when you're done, and faded when the window rolls. No archive. No trace.

A genuine question, actually

What is ephemeral asynchronous communication, anyway?

It sounds like something a VC would put in a deck. But bear with us โ€” it describes something real that most communication tools have quietly moved away from.

Asynchronous just means you don’t have to be online at the same time as the other person. You leave a message; they read it when they can. This is how most of human written communication has always worked โ€” letters, notes, journals. It’s healthy. It gives people time to think.

Ephemeral means the messages don’t stick around forever. Not because they’re deleted maliciously โ€” but because permanence was never the point. A conversation at a place belongs to that moment. After a while, the thread rolls over. The words fade. The memory stays.

Put them together: ephemeral asynchronous communication is leaving a note on the table, not a deposition. It’s what you write knowing it’ll be read eventually โ€” but also knowing it won’t haunt you in a court case ten years from now.

Somewhere Else is built around that idea. Show up when you want. Say what you mean. Let it pass.

"The tyranny of the real-time chat indicator has made us all anxious, reactive, and bad at replying."

* We do store encrypted messages server-side within the rolling window. "Ephemeral" refers to the self-rolling nature of threads, not client-side only storage.

Find somewhere else to be.

Create an account. Find a place. Leave a message that matters โ€” for now.
